Great food is essential in developing great conformation (or body shape). Hikari is a premium Koi food sold worldwide for its' benefits to your Wet Pets, it is not a sub-standard house brand. Many Koi food manufacturers claim that their food is as good as Hikari. there is only one BEST Koi food, and it is Hikari. After millions of dollars of research, over 100 years of experience, and being one of the largest Koi producers in Japan, they are uniquely qualified to produce the best Koi food in the world. If a manufacturer of Koi food does not know what a healthy, quality Koi is, how can they say their food is able to produce healthy, quality Koi? Hikari offers a wide variety of food formulations, pellet sizes, and bag sizes because Koi sizes, pond temperature and the hobbyist's desire to "finish or polish" the Koi varies during the seasonal changes in your pond, and the hobbyist's objectives for the Koi. Some of the specialized formulations are designed to add additional body weight and/or deepening the coloration.
PELLET SIZES: Hikari offers four different pellet sizes for your Koi; however, each type of food is not available in all four pellet sizes. Baby Koi and Koi up to 6" should be given baby or mini pellet. Koi 6" to 14" should be fed medium pellet foods. If all of the Koi in your pond are over 14", they can handle the large pellet and/or any of the smaller pellets. Always select your Koi food pellet size based on the smallest Koi in the pond. TYPES OF FOODS: Wheat Germ foods are used for feeding in cooler water. Gold foods are used for feeding during the higher summer water temperatures. Spirulina, Hi-Growth and Excel are used to "finish out" Koi during the summer, and especially prior to Koi shows.
During the warm spring, summer and fall months, feed your Koi twice per day and feed them only the amount of food that they will totally consume in 5 minutes. If the food is not eaten, it drops to the bottom of the pond and becomes a murky mess and a haven for bacteria growth. Over-feeding or not using a food of good quality are the prime causes of health problems with Koi. As the weather begins to cool off in the fall months, switch Koi to wheat germ foods and gradually taper off feeding according to the drop in water temperature as the Koi go dormant. Do not feed the Koi if the water temperature is below 45°. Please do not order large quantities of Koi food if you do not have room to store it in you freezer or if the food will not be used within 3 months. While larger sizes of Koi foods are more economical, there is a risk of the food becoming stale if unused within 3 months. Foods WILL become stale and rancid if the bag is left open or is placed in the sun too long. Keep enough food in the sealed container for 1 week of feeding. Always use a sealed container for the Koi food and keep it in the refrigerator when you are not feeding your Koi. Please try to follow the guidelines listed below regarding food requirements at different pond water temperatures. 45° AND BELOW WATER TEMPERATURE If your pond water temperature falls to 45° or below, THE KOI SHOULD NOT BE FED AT ALL! The Koi would not be able to digest the pellets. 45° - 52° - 55° WATER TEMPERATURE Feed your Koi every other day, again giving the Koi 10-15 minutes to eat the food. Koi should be fed 1-3 pellets of Koi food per fish at this water temperature. 52° - 55° to 59° WATER TEMPERATURE Feed your Koi once a day. It may take the Koi 10-15 minutes to eat the same volume of food that they took 5 minutes to consume in the summer months because their metabolism is much lower; however, no excess food should fall to the bottom of the pond. If the Koi do not eat the food offered in 15 minutes, decrease the volume of food. The volume of food should be increased gradually as the water temperature increases from 52° to 59°. 60° WATER TEMPERATURE AND ABOVE Feed you Koi twice a day, what the Koi will totally consume within 5 minutes. There should be no excess food falling to the bottom of the pond - EVER! 60° and above is where the color enhancer type foods can be used. In Japan, Wheat Germ Food is used all year, and they supplement that diet with the color enhanced foods in the summer. We recommend 3 parts Wheat Germ to 1 part Color Enhancer foods. HOW TO FEED YOUR KOI BY HAND Many of our customers want to teach their Koi to eat from their hands. It is fun, and this trick will not take long to learn! Go to the same place in the pond each day, once in the morning, and once in the evening. Take the proper amount of Koi food pellets or goldfish food flakes in your hand; close the food in the palm of your hand and quietly and slowly place you hand under the surface of the water. Hold the food in your hand for 30 seconds and if the fish do not come up for the food, release the food but keep your hand in the water while they come up and eat. It will generally take three to five days before they will take the food out of your hand as you feed them. TREATS FOR YOUR KOI Strawberries, Blueberries, Oranges, Lemons, Shrimp, Watermelon, English Peas, Earthworms, Boston and Romaine lettuce are special treats and great color enhancers for your Koi!
