flat sheets and you don't have any folds to worry
about! It takes approximately 21 days to have

Construction related items to remember for ponds.
| 1) |
Make the pond
36" deep with straight sides, no shelves. |
| 2) |
Please don't
build shallow planting shelves. Raccoons and Blue
Herons are very good fishermen in 12" of
water. Use overturned black aquatic plant pots or
bricks covered with an extra piece of your black
pond liner, to raise the plants to the proper
water level. |

Try to build as
large a pond as you have room for and can afford
- it will never be big enough! |
| 4) |
Have the liner or
concrete shell come up above grade 4" -
6". Hide the edge with rock coping. |
| 5) |
Use a very good
pond underlayment or put vermuculite mixed with
mortar behind the liner to cushion against sharp
rocks or tree roots. |

Do not use
copper, brass, aluminum, pressure treated wood,
lead, zinc or galvanized products under, in, or
above the water. |
| 7) |
Do not use
swimming pool liners or roofing materials - they
have algaecides and fungicides impregnated into
them and can harm your koi & plants. |
* A NOTE TO NEW POND OWNERS
Cycle your pond! A pond is an outdoor aquarium and you
must allow
nature time to generate the nitrifying bacteria necessary
to handle
the organic waste generated from a fish pond. Start your
pond with
only 2 koi for a 1200 gallon pond and only 4 koi
for a 2,000
gallon pond. Introduce them into the pond together and do
not add
any additional livestock for 4-6 weeks. After the
nitrification cycle
is complete, you may gradually add additional livestock
for the fish load
capacity of your pond.
CALCULATING YOUR POND'S WATER VOLUME
It is extremely important to know the approximate water
volume of
your pond before administering any water
conditioner, algacide or
medication. Underdosing will usually not be effective and
overdosing
the water can cause problems for your fish. For some,
these calculations
will not be difficult; however, some of the winding,
curving waterfalls
or free form fountains may make finding the water volume
of your pond a
mind bending experience.
